Why Morgan De Sanctis may be the most underrated goalkeeper in the world

Is Morgan De Sanctis the most underrated goalkeeper in the world?

While Morgan De Sanctis may not enjoy the global reputation of some of the most popular goalkeepers on the planet, his statistics since he joined Roma place him at the top alongside his more illustrious peers. For the second season in a row, Morgan De Sanctis is proving to be a key ingredient to Roma’s ability to wrestle the Scudetto title away from bitter rivals Juventus. Ten games into the 2014/15 Serie A season, the Roma custodian has already amassed 6 clean sheets, having missed two games due to injury. Among Europe’s top 5 leagues this season, only Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo, Juventus’ Gianluigi Buffon and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer have kept the opposition off the scoreboard more often than De Sanctis, but they all have the advantage of having played more games. More impressively, Roma’s net-minder leads the way with 8 saves per goal – the highest ratio in Europe’s top 5 leagues. His 3.67 diving saves per goal ratio is second only to Sampdoria’s Emiliano Viviano, who has made 4 diving saves per goal.

2014/15 Season Clean Sheet and Least Goals Allowed Sheet Rankings

At 37 years old, De Sanctis is proving to be one of the most reliable and consistent goalkeepers in the world. His arrival at Roma last season played a huge role in the Giallorossi’s second place finish. De Sanctis finished the 2013/14 season with 21 clean sheets – tied with Lille’s Vincent Enyeama, who was outstanding in Ligue 1 last term, and ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, PSG’s Salvatore Sirigu and Juventus’ Gianluigi Buffon. In terms of least goals conceded per game, Roma’s shot stopper ended last season fourth among Europe’s top 5 leagues with 0.64 goals conceded per 90, behind Manuel Neuer (0.59), Salvatore Sirigu (0.62) and Gianluigi Buffon (0.63), but ahead of Thibaut Coutois (0.65). In comparison to the likes of Neuer and Buffon (and even Courtois), the name De Sanctis may not carry quite the same weight in world football these days, but his record speaks for itself, and as long as he carries on with his current form, Roma fans won’t mind. If the Giallorossi are to prevent the Bianconeri from winning their fourth consecutive Scudetto, the performance of De Sanctis in goal relative to that of Buffon just may be the difference.

2013/14 Season Saves Per Goal Rankings

2013/14 Season Clean Sheet and Least Goals Allowed Sheet Rankings

The Value of a Goalkeeper: The impressive saves per goal ratios attained by Yann Sommer (7.6) and Emiliano Viviano (6.0) this season have a lot to do with Borussia Monchengladbach’s and Sampdoria’s current third place positions in the Bundesliga and Serie A respectively. While goalkeepers don’t necessarily win you titles, the best custodians help their teams earn points throughout a season they wouldn’t have otherwise. Looking at the shot stoppers with the best saves per goal ratios last season, Buffon (4.3 saves per goal) and Neuer (3.94 saves per goal) won the Serie A and Bundesliga titles respectively. While Nice’s David Ospina (4.04 saves per goal) and Levante’s Keylor Navas (4.03 saves per goal) were only able to help their teams place seventeenth and tenth in Ligue 1 and La Liga last term respectively, their clubs would have been much worse off without them. Nice in particular would have almost certainly been relegated without Ospina’s heroic performances in goal.

Both Ospina and Navas went on to have stellar performances at the World Cup for Colombia and Costa Rica respectively, leading their nations to historic quarterfinal stage finishes. Consequently, they earned dream moves to Arsenal and Real Madrid where they are unfortunately currently playing back-up roles to goalkeepers who were statistically inferior last season (Wojsiech Szczesny and Iker Casillas).

Why Real Madrid may regret letting Alonso leave

Why Real Madrid may ultimately regret letting Alonso go

Toni Kroos’ 30M Euro move to Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso’s 8M Euro move in the opposite direction were two of the more intriguing transactions of the transfer window this past summer. While the two moves happened in isolation, they were related in the sense that it was only after Real closed the deal for Kroos earlier in the transfer window (shortly after his World Cup triumph), that Alonso essentially became surplus to requirements in the mind of Madrid’s power brokers. Bayern Munich and Pep Guardiola were more than happy to pounce when they realized that the Spanish International was available at a relatively cut-price fee.
Several Madridistas were (and still are) disappointed to see Alonso leave, and many recognized that Toni Kroos, for all his offensive talent, doesn’t have the natural defensive characteristics possessed by the Spanish International. To put this into perspective, I tried to break down the similarities and differences between the two former World Cup winners by taking a closer look at the performance of Kroos at Bayern over a 5-year period, and that of Alonso in a Real outfit over the same timeframe, and unraveled the following:

Goals, Shots and Creativity:

Between the 09/10 season and the 13/14 season, Kroos averaged 4 goals per season (0.91 non-penalty kick goals per 90), 2.35 shots per 90, 7 assists per season, 2.46 shot assists per 90 and 0.26 big chances created per 90. During the same period, Alonso averaged 1 goal per season (0.02 non-penalty kick goals per 90), 0.68 shots per 90, 5 assists per season, 1.76 shot assists per 90 and 0.19 big chances created per 90.
Essentially, on every one of the offensive metrics mentioned, Kroos has superior numbers, partly explained by the fact that he’s generally played closer to goal than Alonso, who has almost exclusively sat in front of the back four in his career.

On the Ball – Passing:

In terms of passing statistics over the past 5 seasons, Kroos has averaged 63.6 passes per 90 and 0.5 through balls per 90, with an overall passing accuracy of 87.5%. Alonso on the other hand has averaged 75.4 passes per 90, and 0.69 through balls per 90 with an overall passing accuracy of 86%.
While Alonso’s passing accuracy is slightly lower than that of Kroos, (86% vs. 87.5%), he’s averaged 18.6% more passes per game and 38% more through balls per game than Kroos over the past five seasons.

Defensive Action & Duels:

It’s probably on the defensive side of the ball that the effect of losing Alonso in favor of Kroos is going to be felt at Real Madrid over the long term. Over the past 5 years, the German has averaged 2 tackles per 90 in comparison to Alonso’s 3.42. In terms of defensive positional and tactical awareness, Kroos has averaged 0.23 interceptions per game in comparison to 1.4 interceptions per game for Alonso. Lastly and perhaps most crucially, Alonso has recovered 96.2% more balls per game on average than Kroos (10.4 ball recoveries per game vs. 5.3).

With the exception of Madrid’s early-season loss to Real Sociedad in which Los Blancos were exposed defensively, Luca Modric and Toni Kroos have anchored Madrid’s midfield with absolute class. The reality however is that Real Madrid hasn’t been tested enough to determine if the void left by Alonso’s departure is being filled in terms of the protection he provided the defensive back-line of four. Sami Khedira would provide more defensive cover in the midfield position, but his relative lack of technical quality on the ball means that Ancelotti has preferred a Modric-Kroos partnership in midfield. Even in the absence of Modric due to injury, Ancelotti has opted for Isco as a deep-lying playmaker over Khedira. While this strategy may be successful against most teams Madrid encounters, you have to wonder whether Ancelotti’s men may come undone against higher quality opposition. We may not find out until the latter stages of the Champions League this year where the likes of Chelsea or Bayern Munich will provide a much tougher attacking threat to Los Blancos than is posed to them most weekends in La Liga.

Navas: Stay focused and keep up 100% win record in CL.

"VICTORY IS CELEBRATED"

The Costa Rica international reminds his team to stay focused.

Real Madrid goalie Keylor Navas wants his team members not to slip the record 19th win after closing out 2014.

Former Levante and La Liga-goalkeeper of the previous edition has warned his teammates to guard themselves from losing after they start to extend their win run after winter break.

Real Madrid have enjoyed a wonderful season to date after a poor start. The Whites' lost three of their first six games and also suffered back to back defeats against Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid. But Los Blancos' responded then by winning the next 19 games setting a new record.

"We must stay 100% focused and cannot make mistakes. We must be prepared to close out. We are delighted to keep winning and its celebrated".

Navas hasn't played much for Real this season but he likes to keep his mouth shut."It's a dream here. I always want to win titles and its good here. I want to commit and contribute for team. I know road is hard, but there will be barriers, and I will work hard".

"Balon d'Or for a German or Ronaldo is fair"

Bayern Munich's and Real Madrid's former player Xabi Alonso has expressed his Balon d Or favourite this year.

The 32-year old wants either Cristiano or one of the six Germans win this year.

"It would be fair if a German or Ronaldo wins, because they won World Cup and Ronaldo won Champions League" Xabi said to Daily Mail.

Xabi Alonso maybe true according to me. This year's Balon d'Or should be given to either Ronaldo or a German.

Giving the Balon d'Or to Neuer is no fault because he won the Golden Glove. Bastian Schweini was the man who helped Germany pip Argentina. Lahm is the captain of Germany and Kroos has been the most consistent and influential German of this year. Gotze is a small part of their World Cup but his winning-goal and a position in Bayern's XI this season gives him a chance. Whereas Muller's performances should be appericiated. Winning the silver boot and opening Germany's campaign with a hattrick was one of those Muller did this year. He also opened the scoring against Brazil and the winning goal against USA.

On the other side, Xabi Alonso believes Ronaldo deserves this year. The winger has been the most important player and also led them to Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Copa del Rey. When you count the records and goals Ronaldo have scored, there is no one near him.

However, Xabi Alonso was the headline in the Transfer Market this summer after his move to Bayern Munich.

"Real won the 10th Cup. I could have stayed through go somewhere. This is my last script of football. Bundesliga is getting better. And to play for best team in England, Spain and Germany is great".

"Learning off from the best"- Bale on Ronaldo

Gareth Bale believes his idol Cristiano Ronaldo has always made him better.

The 25-year old believes the winger is the best in world and he is pleased to learn from CR7.

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale expressed Ronaldo as the best and he has been learning from the World Player of the Year.

Gareth Bale signed for Madrid back on Sep 11, 2013 and also help them win three titles so far. However, Bale showed his admiration for fellow teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

'Cristiano is the best and learning from best is incredible. My goal is to become a great player and Ronaldo help me make better. I learn everyday from him. I also want to improve my right foot.'

Bale then went to heap praise on his former club rather than Mertesacker's mates.

"I still want Arsenal to lose. If I wasn't here i wouldn't have left. The fans were incredible to me. But the Champions League was the reason why we came here".

"CR7 will win it again".

Brazillian Ronaldo backs Cristiano to repeat 2013 success ahead of Lionel Messi in Balon'd Or list.

Ronaldo Nazario de Lima, also known as Brazillian Ronaldo has backed the Portugese to grab the prize for a second year in a row.

2002 World Cup winner Ronaldo has said that the man with his name will win the Balon d'Or 2014 ahead of Lionel Messi.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been in impressive form this season though he failed to hit the peak in his past three or four games. However, the Portugese has been clinical throughout the year as he scored 51 goals and also won numerous awards. The Real Madrid superstar has been awarded UEFA Champions League Player of the Year, European Golden Shoe, Pichichi award, LFP Player of the Year, LFP Striker of the Year, LFP Goal of the Year award.

CR7 also has a Champions League medal, Copa del Rey and UEFA Super Cup and a Club World Cup still to be played.

Whereas, on the other side, Messi could achieve only the Golden Ball award this year. The Argentine was even pipped out for the Barcelona Player of the Year below Mascherano.

Though Cristiano had a World Cup to forget in which his side was shown the door at group stages, Ronaldo de Lima believes Ronaldo has been better than his rival this time.

"Messi's  year has been memorable like Cristiano. Cristiano is going to win again".

"I think Messi's year hasn't been fantastic".

"I ask Bale to score and get assists" - Ancelotti

"Running is no problem for Bale".

The Italian has shut reporter's mouth after questioning Bale's form this season.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti hit back at reporters after the Italian was asked on Bale.

The ex-PSG coach  said that Bale knows to "run" and he didn't want to explain more to the Welshman. Bale came to the Spanish capital last season for a record 100-million and Ancelotti said that Bale knows how important it is to work hard and to get a starting place in XI.

Isco is currently in starting XI for Bale. And the Spaniard has been in impressive form this season. However, Ancelotti has said that he wants goals and assists from Bale and also said that rotation would take place in the squad.

"I ask Bale to score and get assists and do what he did last year. Running is no problem for Bale. I dont have to tell him like others. They knew it".

"If someone has to be left out to give up a place for Bale, I'll tell him it's nothing definitive. Rotation is normal at this time.Whoever doesnt play tomorrow, will play next game."

Ancelotti also expressed that his side wont change plans against Rayo. He also said that he just don't like such teams.

"I don't like teams that change their ideas against some opponents. Rayo are a great example of Spanish football," he added.

"I'm worried that there are too many compliments. That means that, when things aren't going well, there will be too much criticism. The season is very long."

'Cristiano Ronaldo or a German will win Balon d'Or'.

I can't see Messi winning the Ballon d'Or - Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has tipped his striker or a German player ahead of Argentine Lionel Messi for Balon d'Or.

The ex-AC Milan player has said that Cristiano Ronaldo or any of the 6 Germans will win the most prestigious individual honor this year.

Ancelotti  has revealed that he won't see Lionel Messi winning the award ahead of others. The Argentine and Ronaldo have won last seven Balon d'ors and Ancelotti believes this year Messi won't win them.

"Ronaldo has done everything to win it. Then there could be Germany players because they won the World Cup. I don't see other players who can be on the list," he told a press conference.

Ancelotti then responded to Ronaldo's comments on equalling late Di Stefano.

"Ronaldo believes he is Di Stefano's heir. He has this image, it's a very great compliment. everyone knows what he meant, and to have this image gives him great belief for the future. He deserves it."

Cristiano Ronaldo receives European Golden Shoe

Real Madrid superstar takes a hattrick of Golden Shoe to fill his trophy cabinet.

Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded Golden Shoe for 2013-14 season in which he scored 31 in 27 league games and tie with Luis Suarez.

'LFP Player of the Year' Cristiano Ronaldo has won European Golden Shoe in his glittering career after he previously won it in 2007-08 season and 2010-11 season. The previous three awards was for Lionel Messi but this time the Portugese and Luis Suarez pipped the Argentine for award.

Cristiano also revealed his admiration for Di Stefano and wants to become best player in the world." Everybody believes I am Alfredo and its a honor to compare me with such a great player".

"My opinion is to become the best player. If I retire, I want to know whether I am among the best players. I'll be there and I am certain for it and achieve them".

When asked about his team and teammates, he said in this way:

"I am happy that they are here. It would have been better had Bale, Ramos and Iker been here. If I had invited them, they would have come. This is important because it can happen only with a good team".

"Everyone believes we are the best club, but if we don't win, we are not the best side in history. If we create more chances and have more balls, we can win. And we will go for the treble".

When asked about Blatter's comments on Ronaldo winning Balon d'Or, Ronaldo said that he isn't bothered even if doesn't win.

"I don't want to get into that because the Ballon d'Or will be awarded in January and everything is going well and I'm scoring a few goals. The best place to answer is on the pitch: to those who make opinions about football and those in charge.

"Nothing surprises in the past 6-8 years.I'd like to win athird, but I am not obessed with that".

"I will play till 40" -Iker Casillas

Casillas wants to stay until the age of 40's.

The 33-year-old never considered leaving the Whites.

Real Madrid skipper San Iker Casillas Fernandez has expressed his love at Real Madrid and wants to play for his city as long as he could or for at least seven more years. The Spaniard is currently 33 and wants to play until the age of 40.

Casillas also said that he was allowed to leave when he felt unhappy but the keeper never really thought of that.

"I was allowed to go the day I wanted to leave according to my presidents. I want to play until 40. I am happy here".

When asked why he was always happy there Casillas responded in this way,"If you have a target and if you are strong, you wont leave where you are".

When asked about club's prestige, Spanish number one said anything could be possible in "months". "You can get anything here in months. Example, the European Cup is a great example".

Finally, Casillas was asked about 'The Eleventh'.

"We have got a team for that and we can win the 11th European Cup".

Real Madrid next face Liverpool tonight with Casillas set to make a start like always.

'Best place to win titles is Real Madrid'

The young Spaniard believes his country capital best ever place to fill trophy cabinet.

Isco also reveals he has no intention to leave the "best club" in the world.

Real Madrid midfielder Francisco Roman Alarcon has stressed that he has no intention of leaving Madrid due to sitting on sidelines.

The 23-year-old was cold on bench for most of his first campaign but has shone since Bale's injury. With Bale set to return tomorrow, it threatens Isco for starting XI.

However, he still doesn't want to leave the Whites for Liverpool who is interested in the young Spaniard.

"I am in the best club in the world. It is best club to win titles. I am feeling positive here".

Isco has also likened his team's  summer signings and also mentioned qualities of each one. "Kroos have ball control, James have quality, Chicharito have eye for goal, and Navas is best goalkeeper in the world".

Madrid next face Liverpool tomorrow at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and Isco believes that his side currently lie better than Reds.

"Liverpool are good opponent, but we are better than them".

Granada 0-4 Real Madrid : James stars in Real rout.

Real Madrid move top of La Liga with 4-0 win over the Andalusian side.

James, Cristiano and Benzema displayed five-star performance in Real's win.

Real Madrid crashed Granada 4-0 to bag 11th consecutive win in all competitions. The win kept them top of table at least for 24 hours if Sevilla wins their match.
Real had a bright start with Carvajal reclaiming a lost ball from his foot to pass to Benzema. The Frenchman assisted to Ronaldo who struck a beautiful shot into the bottom corner in the second minute.
The game was completely in Real's control then. Just before half time, James scored a wonderful dipping shot into the net. Real Madrid got a throw-in which James threw to Benzema. The striker lobbed into the Colombian who dipped the shot giving Roberto no chance to get a hand on it.
Real Madrid got the third off Benzema's legs. The Frenchman passed to Ronaldo who passed it to the former with a neat backheel. The Frenchman completed a neat finish to make it 3-0.
The last goal came when Benzema passed the ball to Arbeloa. The Spaniard passed to Ronaldo who could have scored a tap-in, but instead he could just manage a scramp into the ball which James scored 2 yards from goal.
The win kept them top of table after Barcelona slumped to a 1-0 defeat. If Sevilla wins tonight, Madrid will go down one point to Sevilla. But if Sevilla drew level or lose their game, Real will top league after week 10.

Ancelotti: Bale deserves to play

The Welshman will still be a part of starting XI according to his trainer.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is set to choose Bale in starting XI ahead of Isco and James.

Gareth Bale will be one of the best players in the squad and will play in the starting XI instead of being the bench for rest of 2014-2015 insists the Italian.

The Welshman is yet to adapt to life at the Spanish capital although he had a lot of memorable moments in his last one and a half years. However, the stunning form of Francisco Roman Alarcon (Isco) has been a stback for the 25-year-old.

But his coach still believes Bale stand a chance in the squad.

"Isco is playing well and I hope he does so till this season. He is also good with Bale. They have already played together. Bale deserves to play. He is important  and plays well".

When asked about LFP awards, Ancelotti answered that he won't be surprised if Cristiano, Modric and Ramos won them. He also said that they deserved them most.

Ancelotti would also like to rest Bale ahead of Granada match.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is a born winner" says Santos.

The Portugal boss expressed the World Player of the Year as a born winner and would like to win Euro with his current country.

Ex-Greece manager described Cristiano Ronaldo as a winner and hopes the Portugese would repeat his form in the upcoming Euros.

Portugal boss Fernando Santos hailed his captain's performance with scoring 16 goals in just nine league games. The Portugese player also helped Santos men take three crucial points on their way to France 2016 with a 95th minute header.

However, Santos explained that breaking records was in his DNA and he is a born winner himself.

The talk took place in a Portugese radio station and Santos also wants trophies for his nationality  from Cristiano.

"If Ronaldo performed in Euro like this, it would be terrific for us. He needs to break records with international squad. Breaking records and winning is a part of his DNA. Like all, we also want the Euro. If others won it, we can also win it.

Iker Casillas: Top league by Christmas

Real Madrid skipper wants La Liga before 2015 according to his club's aims.

The 33-year-old club icon wants to stand in driver's seat before the end of December and start an even better new year.

"We must try and top league by Christmas. We are closer after Barcelona victory" Casillas told reporters.

When asked what was the inspiration behind achieving aims, the skipper answered the reporters as 'La Decima'.

"La Decima gave celebration to all Real fans. It took a weight from our shoulders".

Real last won La Liga in 2012 under Jose Mourinho with a record 100 points that time. They want to achieve the 33rd in similar fashion and La Decima is taken as inspiration according to the skipper.

'Many forgot Bale scored in Copa del Rey and Champions League finals'

Ancelotti: Bale is important

The former AC Milan boss wants Gareth Bale and slammed those who wanted James and Isco ahead of the Welshman.

Real Madrid's Champions League winning coach Carlo Ancelotti hit back against the media who wrote down the chances of Bale comeback into the starting XI ahead of Isco and James.

The ex-Juventus star has stressed the importance of the number 11 and also reminded them what would have happened if Bale hadn't played in the finals of the two trophies which Madrid had in their cabinet last season.

The report actually came when Ancelotti was said that Isco and James would make the winger on the bench.

Both of them have been in tremendous form which is surely a setback for injured Bale.

However, the Italian reponded in this way:

It seems as many have forgotten what Bale did in the two finals last year. He is equally as important as Isco and James.
Gareth Bale was injured during a training session before the match against Levante. However, the return date is yet to be revealed.

El Clasico Preview

Perhaps the most anticipated and club game of the world.

Barcelona meet Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeau tonight 18:00 CET.

Real Madrid will meet Barcelona later today to cut short the point gap to 1 behind in the league. Barcelona, meanwhile, will look to maintain their undefeated start and clean sheet progress further.

Both teams stand 3rd and 1st respectively. Real Madrid have 18 points and are 1 point behind Sevilla and four behind Barcelona. Blaugrana are currently on driver's seat with 7 wins and a draw of eight.

On the other hand, Cristiano Ronaldo who has 15 goals from 7 games lock horns with Lionel Messi who looks to equal Zarra's all time La Liga goalscoring record with a goal. A hattrick would mean Ronaldo surpass Zarra and Di Stefano to La Liga's all time leading hattrick scorer with 23.

Suarez will make his debut for Catalans today and Isco may start instead of injured Bale. Ramos may also make a comeback for Varane.

Real and Barca have met 228 times with Los Blancos edging Barcelona 91-89 wins.

Rakitic: I want to continue the way how Sevilla defeated Real Madrid

The Croatian international wants to repeat the same success he had with Sevilla when they met the Los Blancos last March.

Ivan Rakitic is pleased to defeat Real Madrid for a second time in a row in his personal career when his former club did it when they met last time.

Real Madrid went on to lose against Sevilla days after a heartbreaking defeat to Barcelona in Santiago Bernabeau where Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick.

Days later, Madrid stumbled to another 2-1 defeat where Rakitic played a key role. He wants to defeat Real Madrid tonight with Barcelona.

"I know matches with Real and Barca are complicated. I won with Sevilla against Real and I want to continue it with Barca".

Meanwhile, Real Madrid, the team who scored most goals, face the team who hadn't concede a single goal in the league.

"If Suarez plays or not, we won't change our plans"- Ancelloti

"SUAREZ WON'T RUIN OUR PLANS"

"If Suarez plays or not, We stick to our plans" - Carlo Ancelloti

Carlo Ancelloti is confident that his plans would work even if Suarez plays or not and also praised the partnership of Messi and Neymar.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti refuses to make a tactical change in order to stop Luis Suarez's atack.

The Uruguayan striker is set to return after serving a four-month ban from football for biting Giorgio Chiellini in their Group D World Cup encounter. However, the Italian has said that his side won't lose due to Suarez's influence.

"If Suarez plays or not, we won't change our plans. His appearance won't cause us problems" Ancelloti said in a press.

The Real Madrid boss also likened the patnership of Messi and Neymar and described them as "dangermen".

"Defending against Messi and Neymar is hard. We know we have defects like everyone. But it is easy against Barca, at least we know them well".

Real Madrid lie fourth in the league heading to Barcelona. A win would put them a point shy of the Catalans and a lose would highly cost them and drag them 7 points behind Luis Enrique's men.

Sergio Ramos and Pepe are expected to be fit according to the Italian.
